How to Postpone Your Wedding

If you are out there and unfortunately faced with the only option but to postpone your wedding, due to varying reasons, (usually Covid related at the moment of course) then this blog will hopefully provide you with some guidance should you be faced with having to postpone or push back your special day to a month or year where there are less restrictions.

There is understandably a lot of unease, a lot of date shuffling and movement and all round hard decisions to be made around weddings at the moment, something we cannot wait to see the other side of!

If you are one of those couples that does have to postpone your date or need to potentially explore the option of moving there is a way to postpone to make the process as smooth as possible both for your venue and vendors and for yourself and your guests.

Let’s tackle and run through some tips and steps in how to go about postponing;

1. Reach out to venue and find a list of dates available for you to potentially re-book.

2. Make a list of dates that suit you as a couple and your close family members- reach out to mum, grandma and your VIP’s to narrow down the venue availability date list before contacting suppliers. You may need to consider if any of the dates fall on public holiday, school holidays or other times that may impact your availability or wedding day.

3. Contact your suppliers with a list of the dates, we suggest ensuring there are multiple dates, leaving you and your vendors options open. I recommend between 4-10 days (the more the better) but this may also depend on venue availability and any stricter time frame you may have to get married of course.

The more dates means it will allow you to hopefully have a common date/s that vendors are available for. Another good idea is popping the day of the week at the beginning of the date and the year, just to be super clear eg. Wed 9th Feb 2022.

4. Embed a poll or survey bulk email to vendors when reaching out to your suppliers, we have had a number of our couples do this and it’s such a great idea, we just click on the link, choose what dates we are available for and submit, the answers go direct to the couples to then collate and review.

You can create a bulk email and embed the poll or survey. There are some great easy/free poll apps you can easily create this in google forms, doodle, slido, survey monkey and easy polls. You can also use excel spreadsheet if you prefer, or of course if all else fails old school is absolutely fine, copy and paste the dates manually into the body of the email.

5. Date found – yay! When you have heard from your suppliers, if there is a common date then connect back in with everyone and you have your postponement date chosen!

Quick tip – if you are concerned about a particular date and keen to possibly lock it in but need to wait to hear back from the venue or other suppliers, it doesn’t hurt to ask your vendors if they don’t mind popping the date on hold for a little bit and check back in with you if it looks like the date may be filled by another inquiring or postponing couple. This just gives you a bit of wriggle room and peace of mind that your date won’t be snapped up from under you.

The aim is to make this a very collaborative, communicative and smooth process for all parties involved, from you as a couple, the venue, your suppliers and guests. The ultimate goal is to retain all your amazing suppliers you originally chose so following this process will give you the best chance in making this happen.
